To honour his reign, the emperor gave his beloved queen a new title, Mumtaz Mahal â the Jewel of the Palace. As an empress, she had the power to influence state affairs and join her husband in campaigns. Their rule was prosperous â one filled with treasure and riches. Shah Jahan began to order the building of magnificent structures across his land. The Pearl Mosque and the Red Fort in Delhi, as well as the Shalimar Gardens in Lahore, were Shah Jahanâs own constructions. He fell in love with architecture and seeing art come to life before his eyes.
But then disaster struck in 1631 when Mumtaz Mahal died while giving birth to her fourteenth child, a baby girl. Shah Jahan was devastated and his grief overwhelmed him. With his heart broken, the one-time warrior-king shut himself up in his chambers and neglected his royal duties. Shah Jahan grieved for two long years and only found solace when he ordered the construction of Mumtazâs tomb. To honour his late wife, the emperor sought to raise one of the most beautiful monuments the world had yet to see. And so, on the bank of the Yamuna river, the building of the Taj Mahal began. It took twenty years! More than 20,000 workers and 1,000 elephants were needed to make it into the marvel it is today. With almost perfect symmetry, precious white-marble tiles and golden calligraphy inscribed on its walls, the Taj Mahal became the burial ground for both Mumtaz Mahal and Shah Jahan after his death. Over 400 years after their story first started, the Taj Mahal remains an ever-lasting symbol of their undying love.
